I heard that the Boston Career Forum (BCF) was this weekend and it sent me on a trip down memory lane. Bear with me a moment! ^.^

Three years ago I was a prospective graduate looking for a chance to prove myself. I was ready to make my mark on the world and looking for an engineering company with opportunity. That summer, I had interned at the world’s largest oilfield services company – you know those stories you hear about oil rigs, fracturing (fracking)… well, that was me for four months, ankle deep in mud and covered and guar. It was fantastic. You have to be of a certain personality to be willing to go out to a pad in the middle of nowhere with a frac crew, but for me it was an unforgettable experience. Anyway, the point is, I didn’t want to just stay in my university’s city of Montreal; I had tasted adventure and I wanted more.

Fast forward a few months to November. Boston. The frigid east coast winter has begun; I only have my suit jacket to keep me warm, but it doesn’t matter anyway since I’m a bundle of nerves. This was altogether a new world – out of the coveralls and hard hat, into the high heels and suit. With little more than ambition and hodgepodge Japanese I made my way to the Boston Career Forum (BCF) among thousands of others dressed just like me.

(well, I allowed myself a coloured blouse)

Three interviews down. Still buzzing with energy, but one company invited me to meet them in Japan so I figure I can take it easy and just stroll the aisles with a friend.

All of a sudden, I’m being called out at by one of the booths.

“Hey you, with the yellow lanyard. Come talk to me!”

… I’m sorry? Definitely was not what I expected in a room full of Japanese companies. The man who called out– let’s call him Mr. Y. He seems friendly, so I figure it might be a nice chat, even if I don’t end up being interested in the company.

We hit it off – he tells me about the cool research he’s doing, and I joke about the uptight HR staff that I can’t seem to communicate well with my level of Japanese. After a while we say our goodbyes and go back to our respective jobs of working the room.

Next interview – another Japanese company and a major shock to the system after my chat with Mr. Y. Cue feelings of self-doubt. Do I really want to work in Japan?? What am I doing here??!

Without realizing it I’m already walking back to Mr. Y’s booth – a company called Tecdia, whom I’d never heard of before – and we’re talking for so long that he convinces me to put in my CV. It was only natural, really – no matter what other company I talked to, I always came back to Tecdia’s booth to unwind.

That became the decision that changed my life. A chance encounter due to the colour of my lanyard led to the start of a new journey. If there is one thing I have learned, it’s that we never know where life will take us. The most important thing is to stick to your gut, take opportunities, and have fun! To all the attendees at BCF: good luck, and meet some great people this weekend, because who knows what could happen.
